Can you sell on Whatnot without going live?
Yes, you can sell on Whatnot without going live: Buy It Now listings sit in your Profile Shop, where buyers can find and buy them at any time, and you ship each order within two business days like any other sale. What still needs a live show, as of October 2026, is everything that happens in real time: auctions, giveaways, Flash Sales, and card breaks.
Written and fact-checked by an active Whatnot breaker on the BreakTemplate team. Updated October 23, 2026. How we check facts
1. How selling without a show works
Every Whatnot listing ends up in one or both of two places. Your Profile Shop is the storefront on your profile, where buyers can browse and buy eligible Buy It Now listings anytime. A show's Live Shop holds the items assigned to that one show. Whatnot notes that listings sold outside of live shows are sometimes called marketplace listings, which is the same thing.
A Buy It Now listing goes to your Profile Shop by default. Turn on Reserve for Live and it moves to a show's Live Shop instead, so nobody can buy it before you go live. If you want an item in both places, create it without Reserve for Live, then import it into your show later. Listings you create from inside a show are reserved for that show automatically.
2. What you can and cannot sell without going live
The split is simple: fixed-price selling works around the clock, and anything that depends on a live audience needs a show. Based on Whatnot's listing guides and policies as of October 2026:
| Format | Without a show? | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Buy It Now (fixed price) | Yes | Shows in your Profile Shop by default, 24/7. |
| Offers on Buy It Now | Yes | Turn on Accept Offers; respond from Seller Hub. |
| Auctions | No | Run during a live show. Reserve for Live is set automatically. |
| Giveaways | No | Created only from an upcoming or active show. |
| Flash Sales | No | A temporary discount during a live show. |
| Card breaks | No | All product must be opened in the same live show. |
| Surprise sets, giveaway entries | No | Not permitted in marketplace listings. |
Card breaks need extra care. Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy requires all product in a break to be opened in the same live show, with the whole break kept on screen, so a break can never run as a shop listing. Whatnot's listing guidelines also bar surprise sets and giveaway entries from marketplace listings. What a breaker can sell from the shop is ordinary inventory: singles, graded cards, supplies, or whole sealed boxes sold as boxes.
3. How to list an item for sale without going live
You need an approved seller account first (the beginner's guide to selling on Whatnot covers the application). Then:
- In the app: tap Seller Hub, then Create Product.
- On the web: go to Seller Hub, Inventory, then Create Product.
- Choose Buy It Now as the format, set a price, and leave Reserve for Live off so the item lands in your Profile Shop.
- Fill in the category, photos, title, description, condition, quantity, and shipping profile.
- Optionally turn on Accept Offers, then tap Publish (or Save Draft to finish later).
A few listing rules matter more when nobody is on camera to answer questions. Photos must show the actual item, and stock photos alone are not allowed. Titles and descriptions must be accurate, and stuffing in popular keywords that do not fit the item is prohibited. If you have several of the same item, post one listing and raise the quantity instead of duplicating it. Autographed items must be certified by JSA, PSA, Fanatics, Beckett, or B.A.M., with a photo of the certification card. For volume, Whatnot supports CSV uploads and a Shopify integration.
4. How long can you sell on Whatnot without going live?
As far as Whatnot's help center shows as of October 2026, there is no expiration date on Buy It Now listings and no stated number of shows you must host to keep a shop open. Your inventory has three tabs: Active (buyers can see and buy), Drafts, and Inactive (sold out or deactivated). A listing stays Active until its quantity hits zero or you deactivate or delete it. Deactivating hides it without deleting it, so you can bring it back later.
The practical limit is shipping, not time. Every out-of-show order still has to get a drop-off scan within two business days. If you will be away, turn on Vacation Mode in Seller Hub, under the menu: it hides your out-of-show listings and shows buyers an On vacation message until you switch it off. It does not pause orders placed during shows. Policies change, so treat your Seller Hub as the final word for your account.
5. Offers: negotiating without a live chat
With Accept Offers on, buyers see an Offer icon and can suggest a discount or a custom price. You answer from Seller Hub, Offers:
- Accept: the buyer is charged and the order is ready to pack and ship.
- Counter: send your own number; the buyer is notified and can respond.
- Decline: the buyer is notified, and you may need to relist the item from Inventory, Inactive.
An order marked Waiting for seller means an offer is sitting there. Answer offers quickly, since an unanswered offer is a lost sale.
6. Will shop listings actually sell?
Honestly, less than live selling for most sellers. Whatnot built its marketplace around shows, and its product team wrote in 2024 that "live shows will always be the core of Whatnot," with marketplace listings as a complement that drives discovery while you are offline. Treat the shop as a second channel, not a replacement:
- Write searchable titles. Whatnot says descriptive titles and relevant keywords help buyers find items in search. Use the year, set, player, card number, and grade.
- Use real, clear photos of the front, back, and any flaws, plus a short video if your account has video listings.
- Price against sold comps, not asking prices, and leave room for offers.
- Feed the shop from your shows. Mention it on stream, and import shop items into a show when you want a live push.
- Get shipping profiles right so buyers are not surprised at checkout. The Whatnot shipping guide has current label prices.
7. Fees on out-of-show sales
Fees work exactly like a show sale. As of October 2026, commission is 8% of the item price at the Standard tier for US sports cards, and payment processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on everything the buyer pays, shipping and tax included. Example: a $40 card, $4.47 shipping, and $3.20 tax (tax varies by location):
- The buyer pays $47.67.
- Commission: 8% of $40 = $3.20.
- Processing: 2.9% of $47.67 = $1.38, plus $0.30 = $1.68.
- You keep $35.12, and the $4.47 covers the label.
Bigger sellers pay lower tier rates, and sports singles get 0% commission on the portion of an order above $1,500 for now. Whatnot fees explained has the full tier table, and the Whatnot fee calculator runs any price. Confirm your rate in your seller dashboard.
8. Common mistakes
- Listing a break or mystery set in the shop. Breaks must run live, and surprise sets are not allowed in marketplace listings.
- Forgetting Vacation Mode. A trip with an open shop means orders you cannot ship on time.
- Leaving Reserve for Live on. The listing never appears in your Profile Shop.
- Stock photos or vague conditions. Nobody can ask you on camera, so the listing has to do the talking.
- Duplicate listings for the same item instead of one listing with a quantity.
For breakers: the shop between shows, the board during them
Breaks have to happen live, so the shop is where singles and supplies sell between streams. When you are live, BreakTemplate gives you a break board: you type each buyer once in Break Control and the OBS overlay updates in about two seconds, with each break's revenue, logged costs, and profit kept together. It does not import Whatnot sales or calculate fees. For what to stock, see where Whatnot sellers get their inventory.

Selling without going live: questions
Can you sell on Whatnot without going live?
Yes. As of October 2026, Buy It Now listings appear in your Profile Shop by default, where buyers can browse and buy them at any time without a show. Auctions, giveaways, Flash Sales, and card breaks still need a live show.
How long can you sell on Whatnot without going live?
Whatnot's help center does not list an expiration date for Buy It Now listings or a minimum number of shows as of October 2026. A listing stays Active until it sells out, which moves it to Inactive, or until you deactivate or delete it. Check your Seller Hub for anything specific to your account.
What are Whatnot marketplace listings?
It is another name for listings sold outside of live shows. Whatnot calls the storefront on your profile the Profile Shop, and eligible Buy It Now listings there can be bought anytime, separate from the Live Shop attached to a specific show.
Can you run auctions on Whatnot without a live show?
Not as of October 2026. Whatnot's listing guide describes auctions as bidding during a live show, and auction listings are automatically reserved for live. You can create the auction listing ahead of time, and buyers can pre-bid if you allow it, but the auction itself runs in your show.
Do I still have to ship within 2 business days if I'm not live?
Yes. Out-of-show orders follow the same two business day shipping requirement as show orders. If you will be away, turn on Vacation Mode, which hides your out-of-show listings and shows buyers an On vacation message until you switch it off.
Are fees different for sales outside a live show?
No. The same commission applies to the item price, 8% at the Standard tier for US sports cards as of October 2026, plus payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the full order including shipping and tax.
