Whatnot shipping for sellers: how much it costs, labels, and deadlines.

Shipping on Whatnot is paid by the buyer by default and priced by packed weight: as of October 2026, a US Ground Advantage label costs $4.47 for a package up to 4 oz and a flat $7.75 from 1 to 5 lbs, while an eligible plain white envelope of cards costs $0.78 to $1.39. The seller prints a prepaid Whatnot label, has two business days to get a drop-off scan, and can choose to cover some or all shipping instead.

Written and fact-checked by an active Whatnot breaker on the BreakTemplate team. Updated October 21, 2026. How we check facts

1. Who pays for shipping on Whatnot

By default the buyer pays shipping at checkout. For live shows you can change that in your shipping settings, if the option appears in your account (it is not available to every seller or region yet):

  • Seller pays all shipping: you cover domestic shipping; buyers still pay for international.
  • Buyer Pays Max: you cap what a buyer pays and cover the rest. Whatnot's example: with a $7.75 cap and $20 of shipping, the buyer pays $7.75 and you pay $12.25.

These settings cover shows only, not out-of-show orders or giveaways. For giveaways the seller always pays, and the cost comes out of your Whatnot balance when the giveaway runs. From the contiguous US, free or discounted shipping applies to mainland US buyers only.

2. How shipping is calculated: profiles and weight classes

Every listing gets a shipping profile: the packed weight of the item, mailer, and packaging. Whatnot uses it to price shipping, pick the service, generate the label, and bundle orders. Too low and the label is underpaid, so you may pay the difference or have the package refused; too high and buyers overpay. Custom profiles suit bulky or fragile items.

Ground Advantage is the default US service. Whatnot's negotiated rates for the contiguous US, including a small operational fee (Alaska and Hawaii pay standard USPS rates):

Packed weightGround Advantage
Up to 4 oz$4.47
Over 4 oz, up to 8 oz$4.85
Over 8 oz, up to 12 oz$5.25
Over 12 oz, under 1 lb$6.75
1 to 5 lbs$7.75
Over 5 lbsZone-based, varies by weight and destination

Priority Mail is optional and, per Whatnot, usually at least $5 more. Flat Rate boxes can be turned on for live-show shipments over 1 lb at a temporary $12.99 through November 1, 2026; Whatnot says Flat Rate stays after that at a higher rate it had not published when we checked. Never put a Ground Advantage label on Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging: USPS can charge about $20 per package, billed to your account. Orders placed outside a show ignore your show settings and ship on the cheapest eligible service for the listing's profile.

3. Plain white envelopes for cards (FCML)

US sellers can turn on USPS First-Class Mail Letter (PWE) before a show. A shipment qualifies only if it is:

  • Sports Cards, Trading Card Games, or Stickers sold during a live show, without a custom shipping profile.
  • 5 or fewer items, 3 oz or less, worth $20 or less, going to a US address.
Envelope weightFCML label
Up to 1 oz$0.78
Over 1 oz, up to 2 oz$1.09
Over 2 oz, up to 3 oz$1.39

The envelope must be 5 to 11½ inches long, 3½ to 6⅛ inches wide, no more than ¼ inch thick, even, and flexible enough to bend. No bubble mailers, rigid cardboard, or stiff inserts. Whatnot's packaging rules put high-value cards in a top loader inside a padded mailer, so FCML suits flexible, low-value singles. If a shipment stops qualifying, for example a card sells above $20, Whatnot upgrades it automatically. Tracking is limited, delivery takes about 2 to 10 business days, and standard payout starts 10 days after the label is created, so scan each envelope in the app at drop-off.

4. Combined shipping and Smart Bundling

Smart Bundling combines purchases automatically when they come from the same buyer, in the same sales channel, on profiles with no max bundle size. Show and out-of-show purchases do not bundle together, and Whatnot sometimes splits an order if that is cheaper, with a label for each shipment. In Sports Cards, items on the 0 to 1 oz profile add 0.5 oz each after the first instead of the full weight. You can bundle or unbundle by hand in Seller Hub. Weekly Bundling is not offered to US sellers as of October 2026.

5. Labels: prepaid, your own, and insurance

You do not buy postage. Open Shipments in Seller Hub, generate the prepaid label (8.5 × 11 or 4 × 6 for thermal printers), print it, and attach it. The app makes one label at a time; bulk labels need whatnot.com. QR code labels are not supported, so you need a printer.

Your own postage is only allowed under Bring Your Own Label, which needs approval and covers narrow cases such as the Wholesale category; without approval it can break tracking and delay your payout. US sellers can add shipping protection (1% of item value plus shipping cost, up to $10,000 covered) and USPS signature confirmation ($4.36 plus tax), both paid by the seller.

6. How to change shipping on Whatnot as a seller

  • Your defaults: in the app, Seller Hub, menu, Settings, Shipping Settings. US sellers can also use whatnot.com, Shipments, Shipping Settings for domestic options, but Buyer Pays Max is app only.
  • One show: Seller Hub, Shows, select the show, More, Edit Show, Shipping Settings. Shipping is locked once the show starts.
  • One listing: change the shipping profile on any active listing at any time.
  • After a sale: on whatnot.com only, open the shipment and choose Edit Shipping Details, or Generate New Label if one exists. Weight, size, and service can change until drop-off.

US sellers get 5 free shipping adjustments a week, resetting Sunday at 7:00 pm ET. After that, a costlier label is charged to your balance, and a cheaper one is not refunded. International shipping is on automatically for eligible buyers and cannot be turned off.

7. How long does a seller have to ship on Whatnot?

Two business days from the sale, excluding weekends and public holidays, so a Friday sale should be dropped off by the end of Tuesday. An order counts as shipped once it gets a drop-off scan: a carrier or kiosk scan, a USPS SCAN form, or a scan with the Whatnot in-app scanner, which Whatnot recommends using with the label attached, right at drop-off.

  • Late or unconfirmed shipments hurt your average ship time and on-time scan rate, which feed Account Health and Premier Shop eligibility.
  • With no label or shipment confirmation in time, a buyer may cancel or be refunded, billed back to you.
  • Repeated late shipping can cost you Early Payout and lead to suspension.

In an emergency, message the affected buyers, turn on Vacation Mode, and email Whatnot's trust and safety team.

8. Packaging cards safely

Poor packaging can lead to higher seller fees or lost selling privileges. Whatnot's card rules:

  • Penny sleeves are recommended for every card; high-value cards need a penny sleeve plus a properly sized top loader, sealed with painter's tape, not Scotch tape.
  • Raw cards go in a team bag; slabs go in a graded card sleeve or team bag.
  • Ship in a bubble mailer or padded packaging, with inserts or padding so nothing moves. Sealed wax ships in a box.

For breaks, weigh one finished mailer and use that weight for your profile instead of guessing.

9. International orders

US sellers' international orders ship with USPS on a service Whatnot picks: First-Class Package International up to 4 lbs and under $400, Priority Mail International otherwise. Rates were last updated October 12, 2026; a package up to 4 oz to Canada costs $8.55 to $9.12. Buyers pay shipping unless you cover it, and customs charges are collected from them. Shipments over $2,500 need export filing (an ITN) before the label prints, with an exception for most shipments to Canada, and delivery typically takes 1 to 4 weeks.

10. How shipping affects your fees

Commission is charged on the item price only. The US processing fee, 2.9% + $0.30, is charged on the total the buyer pays, shipping and tax included. A $20 card with $4.47 shipping and $1.60 tax (tax varies by location):

  • The buyer pays $26.07.
  • Commission at the 8% Standard sports rate: $1.60.
  • Processing: 2.9% of $26.07 = $0.76, plus $0.30 = $1.06.
  • You keep $17.34, and the $4.47 pays for the label.

If you cover that shipping instead, the buyer pays $21.60, processing drops to $0.93, and after the $4.47 label you keep $13.00. Whatnot fees explained covers the tier rates, and the Whatnot fee calculator runs any sale.

For breakers: shipping is a break cost

Covered shipping, giveaway labels, and supplies all come out of a break's profit. BreakTemplate keeps each break's revenue, costs, and profit next to the live board you type buyers into, with an OBS overlay that updates in about two seconds. It does not import Whatnot sales or calculate fees. How to run a Whatnot break covers shipping hits in the full workflow.

Whatnot shipping: questions

How much is shipping on Whatnot?

It depends on packed weight. As of October 2026, US Ground Advantage labels on Whatnot run from $4.47 up to 4 oz to a flat $7.75 for 1 to 5 lbs within the contiguous US, and eligible card orders in a plain white envelope cost $0.78 to $1.39. The buyer pays by default.

Who pays for shipping on Whatnot, the buyer or the seller?

The buyer pays shipping at checkout by default. Sellers can change a show to seller pays all domestic shipping, or set a Buyer Pays Max amount and cover the rest. Sellers always pay shipping for giveaway prizes.

How long does a seller have to ship on Whatnot?

Two business days from the sale, not counting weekends and public holidays. An order counts as shipped once it gets a drop-off scan, such as a carrier scan or a scan with the Whatnot in-app scanner. Something sold on Friday should be dropped off and scanned by the end of Tuesday.

How do I change shipping on Whatnot as a seller?

Change defaults in the app under Seller Hub, menu, Settings, Shipping Settings. Edit one upcoming show through Edit Show, Shipping Settings before it starts. To fix an order after a sale, open the shipment in Seller Hub on whatnot.com.

Can you ship cards in a plain white envelope on Whatnot?

Yes, for US sellers. USPS First-Class Mail Letter must be turned on before the show, and it applies to Sports Cards, Trading Card Games, and Stickers sold live when the shipment has 5 or fewer items, weighs 3 oz or less, is worth $20 or less, and goes to a US address.

Does Whatnot charge fees on shipping?

Commission is charged on the item price only, not shipping. The US payment processing fee, 2.9% plus $0.30 per order, is calculated on everything the buyer pays, including shipping and tax.
