How to sell on Whatnot: the 2026 beginner's guide.
To sell on Whatnot, tap + Sell in the Whatnot app, complete the short seller application, and verify your phone number, payment method, and government ID. Then you schedule a live show, sell through auctions, Buy It Now, and giveaways, ship each order within two business days on a prepaid label, and get paid once the package is delivered. Here is every step with the current rules, a worked fee example, and what your first week looks like.
Written and fact-checked by an active Whatnot breaker on the BreakTemplate team. Updated October 20, 2026. How we check facts
1. Before you apply: what you need
Get everything ready first, because the main new seller bonus starts counting the moment you get access (section 8).
- A supported country: the US (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands), Canada, the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, or Japan (limited pilot).
- Age: account holders must be 18 or older; sellers aged 13 to 17 sell through a verified parent or guardian account.
- Verification: a phone number, a payment method, and a government photo ID such as a driver's license or passport.
- A matching bank account: US sellers need a US account in USD, or payouts can fail.
- Supplies, a scale, and a printer: you can make labels one at a time in the app or in bulk on whatnot.com, and accurate weights keep shipping charges right.
Sports cards and card breaks need no extra approval. A few gated categories do, such as luxury watches, luxury bags, supplements, and fresh food.
2. How to become a seller on Whatnot
- Open the app and tap + Sell, then Get Started.
- Agree to the Community Guidelines.
- Choose your primary seller category.
- Answer a few questions about your selling experience. Brand new is a fine answer.
- Enter your legal name as it appears on your ID and the address you ship from (a PO box works).
- Submit. Many sellers unlock access within minutes; otherwise Whatnot emails the next steps.
3. Schedule and run your first show
A show is a scheduled livestream. In Seller Hub, tap Schedule a Show, enter a name, date, and time, choose a category (the show only appears there), pick a primary selling format, and publish. Add a vertical 1080 × 1920 thumbnail, tags, and show notes, then share the link early so followers can bookmark it. Before going live, add listings with accurate weights and finish seller verification. You do not need to show your face; many sellers keep the camera on the product.
How to start an auction
List the item with Auction as the format and reserve it for the show. While live, tap the Shop icon, open the Auction tab, pick the item, tap Start Auction, set the details, and tap Start:
- Starting bid: the lowest price you will accept.
- Auction time: the minimum length. Many Whatnot auctions last 30 seconds or less.
- Counter bid time: under 10 seconds left, each new bid resets the clock to this.
- Sudden death (optional): ends at 00:01 with no time added for late bids.
The highest bid wins, and a started auction cannot be canceled. Buy It Now sells at a fixed price, and pre-bids, if you enable them, let buyers bid before the show. Giveaways are free to enter and run up to five minutes, but you pay the winner's shipping and must post official rules, including NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.
4. How to enable seller tools on Whatnot
- Full Seller Hub: new sellers unlock it, including Rehearsal Mode for practice shows with test buyers, after completing the first show checklist and going live once.
- Livestream Seller Tools: Camera Zoom and Facecam (front and rear cameras at once) are off by default and work on iOS and web. In the app: Account icon, Account tab, Preferences, toggle on Seller Tools. On web: open your show in Seller Hub, then More, then Seller Tools.
5. What it costs to sell on Whatnot
As of October 2026, a US seller of sports cards pays two fees per order:
- Commission: 8% of the item price at the Standard tier, not counting shipping or tax. Coins & Money run 4%.
- Payment processing: 2.9% + $0.30 on everything the buyer pays, shipping and tax included.
Worked example: a $50 card
- The buyer pays $50 plus $5.00 shipping and $4.00 tax: $59.00
- Commission: 8% of $50 = $4.00
- Processing: 2.9% of $59.00 = $1.71, plus $0.30 = $2.01
- You keep $43.99. The shipping pays for the prepaid label, and the tax is not yours.
Cheap items lose more to the fixed $0.30: a 32-spot break of $7 spots pays about $34 in fees, roughly 15%. Whatnot fees explained breaks this down by price, and the Whatnot fee calculator runs any sale.
Lower rates as you grow
Since September 21, 2026, your total sales across all categories in a four-week period set a tier, and its lower rate applies to the next period. US rates for sports cards and trading card games:
| Sales in four weeks | Commission |
|---|---|
| $0 to $14,999 (Standard) | 8.00% |
| $15,000 to $34,999 | 7.75% |
| $35,000 to $49,999 | 7.50% |
| $50,000 to $99,999 | 7.25% |
| $100,000 to $249,999 | 7.00% |
| $250,000 to $499,999 | 6.75% |
| $500,000 and up | 6.50% |
Whatnot also charges 0% commission on the part of a single order above $1,500 for sports singles and some other categories, but sports breaks are excluded and processing still applies. Rates vary by country and category, so confirm yours in Seller Hub, where every order shows the rate charged.
6. Shipping your orders
By default the buyer pays shipping at checkout, based on your shipping settings and the item weights you enter, packaging included. After a show:
- Open Shipments in Seller Hub, handle any cancellation requests, and check how Smart Bundling combined each buyer's purchases.
- Fix any weights that do not match the real package.
- Generate and print the prepaid labels: one at a time in the app, or all at once on whatnot.com.
- Pack securely and drop off within 2 business days of the sale. Scanning packages in the app first records proof of shipment.
7. How and when you get paid
Earnings show as Processing until they become available; then you start a payout. For US, Canadian, and Japanese sellers, earnings become available within four hours of confirmed delivery, and US payouts reach the bank in one to two business days (Canada: three to four). Exceptions: with your own label, processing starts seven days after you enter tracking, and with USPS First-Class Mail Letter (plain white envelope), ten days after the label is made.
Meet the Early Payout requirements shown in Seller Hub (a seller rating, a number of lifetime shows, and a lifetime sales or orders milestone) and earnings unlock when you generate the label. New sellers may see occasional payment holds while the account builds history.
8. Whatnot new seller bonus and promotions
As of October 2026, Whatnot runs a New Seller Sales Match Bonus. If you are offered it, a Home screen banner shows the amount, requirements, progress, and time left. Whatnot matches eligible item sales one to one, up to the in-app maximum. Requirements can include a minimum time live and a minimum number of unique buyers, and private shows and local pickup do not count. The bonus reaches your balance within 14 days once the period ends and every qualifying order has shipped.
The key detail: the period starts the moment you get selling access and cannot be restarted or extended. Apply when your inventory and first shows are ready.
After a first sale, some sellers are invited to a 7-day Rising, Power, or Super Seller Bonus challenge (a sales goal, three hours live, a minimum number of buyers, every order shipped). Amounts vary, and combined offers are capped at $1,500 per household per year. To check yours, look for the banner in the app and the Getting started section of the Whatnot help center.
9. What to expect in week one
- Day 1: apply, verify, set up shipping and payouts, and schedule show one a few days out.
- Days 2 and 3: list inventory with real weights and test your camera angle.
- Show day: keep it short, mix auctions with a giveaway, and thank buyers by name.
- Next day: print, pack, scan, and drop off.
- Rest of the week: watch earnings move from Processing to Completed, practice in Rehearsal Mode, and schedule show two.
10. Common beginner mistakes
- Applying before you are ready: the bonus clock starts at access.
- Guessing weights: wrong weights mean wrong shipping charges.
- Low starting bids on items you need to sell high: a started auction cannot be canceled.
- Shipping late: two business days is the standard, and it counts toward Early Payout.
- Picking a category for its rate: Whatnot treats that as fee avoidance.
- Ignoring the card break rules: keep all product on camera from the first sale to the end, post the rules in show notes or listings, open everything in one show, keep household members out, and skip randomizer wheels, physical or digital, which Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy bans.
Planning to run card breaks?
Read how to run a Whatnot break for the full show, then OBS setup for Whatnot when you move off a phone-only stream. In BreakTemplate you type each buyer once in Break Control and the OBS overlay updates in about two seconds, with each break's revenue, costs, and profit kept together. It does not import Whatnot sales, so you still enter buyers yourself.
